Our History

Apasen: A Legacy of Compassionate Care and Community Empowerment

Apasen was established on November 15, 1984, by a group of parents, supported by a social worker from Tower Hamlets Social Services and a liaison officer from Beatrice Tate Special School, representing the Ethnic Minorities Team of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. Recognising the urgent need for culturally sensitive services for individuals with disabilities, the founders set the foundation for what would become one of London’s most respected care organisations.

Shortly after its founding, Apasen secured crucial grants and partnerships that enabled it to expand its services. These early successes included the establishment of a Day Care Project for Bangladeshi adults with disabilities and the launch of projects focused on employment support, independent living, and health awareness. These initiatives marked the beginning of Apasen’s formal journey in the care sector, laying a strong foundation for its growth and impact in the years to come.

As Apasen celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2024, the organisation continues to lead with innovation, compassion, and a deep commitment to its founding principles. The past four decades have been marked by significant growth, but the essence of Apasen’s mission remains unchanged: to provide compassionate, continuous care for individuals with disabilities and their families.

From its humble beginnings in 1984, Apasen has grown into a leading care provider, steadfast in its mission to support individuals with disabilities and their families. This milestone is not only a celebration of Apasen’s accomplishments but also a heartfelt tribute to the many carers, staff members, and volunteers whose dedication has helped shape the organisation’s success.

Throughout the years, Apasen has positively impacted the lives of thousands, offering more than just care — but also hope, dignity, and the opportunity to live fulfilling lives. The organisation’s history serves as a powerful reminder of the incredible things that can be achieved when a community unites around a shared vision of inclusivity and support.

Looking to the future, Apasen remains resolute in its commitment to expanding its services, driving innovation in care, and advocating for the rights and well-being of individuals with disabilities. As we embark on the next 40 years, we will continue to build on this strong foundation, ensuring that Apasen remains a beacon of hope, support, and opportunity for generations to come.

In 2010 our service
provision progressed
outside the borough of Tower Hamlets

And has continued to since. Apasen now has a Day Care Centre facility in Croydon and a Residential Respite Care Home for Learning Disabilities in the borough of Redbridge.

In November 2011 Apasen moved to a purpose built centre at Carmine Wharf, 30 Copenhagen Place, London E14 7FF to cater for the needs of local communities in the heart of East London and beyond. The opening ceremony of new Apasen Community Hub, was inaugurated by LutfurRahman, Executive Mayor of Tower Hamlets, and Maria Miller MP, Minister of Disabled People on Tuesday 22nd May 2012.
