The 78th United Nations General Assembly Sideline Conference, titled “Bangladesh: Branding through UN Peacekeeping and NRBs,” convened in New York on 24 September 2023. Distinguished attendees included Dr. AK Abdul Momen, the Foreign Minister of Bangladesh, Dr. Mashiur Rahman, Economic Affairs Adviser to the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Ambassador Dr. Sima Karetnaya, US Ambassador of Peace, UN & Expert WHO, and Najmul Huda, Consul General of Bangladesh in New York. The event was presided over by S M Shekil Chowdhury, Chairperson of Centre for NRB.
This conference brought together influential figures, diplomats, and thought leaders to discuss the pivotal role of Non-resident Bangladeshis (NRBs) in philanthropic endeavours and their significance in building global partnerships. The event also delved into fostering socio-economic activities, enhancing people-to-people relations, safety, and effective organisational strategies within the context of UN peacekeeping efforts.
In his opening remarks, M S Shekil Chowdhury stated, “We are gathered here today to celebrate the tireless efforts and remarkable contributions of our Non-resident Bangladeshis. Their dedication to humanitarian causes, their passion for building bridges of understanding, and their commitment to fostering a better world are truly commendable. This conference serves as a testament to their enduring spirit and our shared commitment to global progress.”
As the keynote speaker on NRB and philanthropy, the Chief Executive of Apasen and Apasen International Mahmud Hasan MBE delivered a compelling address emphasizing the substantial contributions of NRBs in various global initiatives. Mr. Hasan highlighted their active involvement in philanthropy, which has not only improved the lives of countless individuals but has also played a crucial role in promoting international peace and cooperation.
Mr. Hasan stated, “Apasen and Apasen International serve as classic examples of NRBs channelling their philanthropic efforts towards a brighter future for Bangladesh. Through education, healthcare, and various community initiatives, Apasen International has illuminated the path to a more prosperous Bangladesh, fostering the growth of global partnerships along the way.”
Foreign Minister Dr. AK Abdul Momen underscored the robust relationship between Bangladesh and the USA, characterised by strong ties in trade and shared values. He encouraged the Diaspora to maintain their connections with Bangladesh and actively participate in advancing the socio-economic progress of both nations.
Dr. Momen also brought attention to Bangladesh’s resilience, particularly evident during the Great War of Liberation in 1971. He noted that during this critical period, the nation displayed unwavering resolve in the face of oppression, injustice, and discrimination, ultimately securing its independence through the sacrifices of three million people. This historic struggle served as a poignant example of the courage and self-sacrifice inherent in the Bengali nation.
He added, “Non-resident Bangladeshis have consistently proven their commitment to humanitarian causes and global solidarity. Their unwavering support has enabled the realization of vital socio-economic projects worldwide. Through collaboration and unity, NRBs have helped bridge cultural divides and fostered a sense of togetherness.”
Dr. Mashiur Rahman, Economic Affairs Adviser to the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, emphasized, “NRBs have become a driving force in strengthening Bangladesh’s image on the global stage. Their contributions to socio-economic development and their role in forging international partnerships are truly commendable. It’s crucial to harness this potential for the betterment of our nation.”
Ambassador Dr. Sima Karetnaya highlighted, “NRBs have not only demonstrated a commitment to philanthropy but have also been instrumental in promoting peace and unity. Their active engagement in global initiatives aligns with the United Nations’ mission to create a more peaceful world.”
The conference explored strategies to further enhance the engagement of NRBs in building stronger global partnerships, encouraging sustainable socio-economic development, and facilitating cultural exchange between nations. The valuable insights shared during the conference underscored the critical role that NRBs play in advancing international cooperation and development.
